Beaumont Hospitals, a world leader in radiation oncology research and treatment, is planning to develop a proton therapy center which will offer proton therapy as part of its cancer treatment options. Beaumont has been approved by the Michigan Department of Health (MDCH) to bring proton therapy to the State of Michigan.
Proton therapy is the most precise and effective form of radiation therapy available. It can precisely target a tumor, reducing radiation exposure to nearby healthy tissue and reducing side effects. This allows patients to receive more effective treatment doses.
Studies have shown it is effective in treating brain, head and neck, pediatric, colorectal, and prostate tumors, among others. It is often a better form of treatment for children, who are more sensitive than adults to the effects of radiation.
It is estimated that more tan 51,000 Michigan residents are diagnosed with cancer each year. About 60 percent of all cancer patients receive radiation therapy and many of them are candidates for proton therapy.
To make proton therapy available and accessible to more patients in need, Beaumont Hospitals and ProCure Treatment Centers are developing the proton therapy center at Beaumont. ProCure’s staff is made up of proton therapy experts with experience building and operating proton therapy centers.
Based on the experience of other proton therapy centers in the country, we expect patients will travel to the Royal Oak facility from other states and countries.
Nearly 50,000 people worldwide have received proton therapy at centers in Europe, Asia and the United States. Only five proton centers currently operate in the U.S.
