The Internet delivers reams of information to libraries, offices and homes with just a few clicks of the mouse. As a result, you can quickly and easily find information about all types of cancer and their treatments. Unfortunately, the speed and anonymity of the Internet also allow salespeople and con artists to peddle their schemes.

The National Cancer Institute suggests that you carefully evaluate the sources of information on the Internet, and talk with your health-care provider about what you find. Keep these key points in mind as you search the Web.

  • A site’s sponsor should be identified.
  • The original source of the material should be clearly identified.
  • Health-related sites should list the credentials of the people who prepare or review material for the site.
  • The site should be updated regularly or the information may no longer apply.
  • Sites asking for personal information should explain exactly how they plan to use that information and whether it will be passed along.
  • Sites selling “miracle cures” or featuring incredible testimonials should be viewed with skepticism.

Remember that your own doctor knows you and your medical condition personally. Materials on the Internet, even from credible sources, can only give you general information. So talk with your doctor about any questions or concerns you may have.
