Liver Cancer

The liver is the largest organ in the body. All the blood exiting the stomach and intestines passes through the liver, which processes nutrients and drugs. The liver also excretes bile, which carries waste products away. The liver maintains hundreds of vital functions, including regulating most chemicals in the blood. Primary liver cancer starts in the liver. Metastatic liver cancer has spread from another site to the liver. Most malignant tumors in the liver are metastatic.

The biliary system refers to the organs and ducts that produce and transport bile, including the bile ducts and gallbladder. The biliary system carries away waste and helps digest fats.

The pancreas located behind the stomach, releases digestive enzymes and hormones. These enzymes help break down carbohydrates, fats, proteins and acids. Hormones from the pancreas regulate glucose (blood sugar).
